Guide for restaurants

From the plate to a 3D menu, step by step.

First add your products and choose a menu style. Then scan your signature dishes in 3D. Drinks and other products can use a photo or just text. Below are the steps and scanning tips.

Two ways to get a 3D dish

Scan with your phone

recommended

Walk around the plate with your phone for about a minute. The 3D model shows exactly your dish: the portion, the colours, the plate.

  • Most faithful result
  • Real size in AR (when you enter the plate diameter)
  • For your signature dishes

AI from a photo or text

quick

Upload a photo of the dish or describe it in a few words. In 1–3 minutes you have a 3D preview.

  • Good to get started, or when the dish is not at hand
  • Paid with a few points from your plan
  • Replace it with a real scan at any time

The steps, from sign-up to your first guest

  1. 01

    Create your account and restaurant

Name, logo and colour. The colour is picked from your logo automatically; you can change it any time. Choose one of three styles: Studio, Restaurant or Light. You get a menu address like menu3d.ai/m/your-name.

  2. 02

    Add your products

Categories, name, price, description, ingredients, the 14 EU allergens and tags (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, spicy). Each product can be text only, with a photo or in 3D — start with what you have.

    • Put your signature dishes in 3D first: the ones you would recommend to every guest.
    • Text and photo products are unlimited and do not count toward the 3D model limit.
  3. 03

Scan the dish with your phone

In the dashboard tap “Scan a dish”, scan the QR code with your phone and follow the guide: three slow rounds around the plate — at plate level, diagonally and from above. The app keeps only sharp frames.

    • It takes about a minute; nothing to install.
    • The phone tells you if you are too close or too far and which angles are still missing.
  4. 04

    3D processing runs by itself

Once the frames are sent, the 3D model is usually ready in a few minutes. The table and background are cut away automatically, and the dish appears in your 3D library and in the menu.

    • If no model can be built, the scan is refunded and you can redo it.
  5. 05

    Check the model

Rotate it in the dashboard, choose the angle used as the menu picture and, for real size in AR, enter the plate diameter in centimetres.

  6. 06

Publish the menu and put QR codes on the tables

One QR code for the whole menu, or one per table (with table ordering, if you turn it on). Download them as PNG/SVG or print an A4 sheet with every table. You can also embed the menu on your own website with one line of code.

  7. 07

    Guests open the menu

They scan the code, browse the dishes, rotate them in 3D and tap “See it on your table” to view them in augmented reality, without an app. In the 3D viewer they move from one dish to the next with a swipe.

Checklist for a good scan

Before
  • Plenty of even light — near a window, no direct sun, no flash.
  • A matte, textured table (wood, a tablecloth). Avoid glass and glossy surfaces.
  • Free space all around the plate so you can walk in a circle.
  • Wipe the camera lens.
  • The dish looks as served: the real portion, the real plate.
While scanning
  • Move slowly, in small steps; the phone moves around the plate, the plate stays still.
  • Three rounds: at plate level, diagonally, from above.
  • Keep the whole dish in frame, about half of the screen.
  • Do not touch or move anything until you finish.
  • No moving shadows: do not step between the light and the plate.
What is harder
  • Clear soups and drinks, glass, ice: transparent or reflective surfaces have no detail for the camera to track.
  • Very glossy sauces: softer, more diffuse light helps.
  • Very small dishes: get closer, but keep the whole dish in frame.

When to use AI

AI is useful when you want to start quickly, or when a dish is seasonal or not at hand. In the dashboard choose “AI from a photo” (a clear photo with the whole dish, from slightly above, on a plain background) or “AI from text” (describe what is on the plate; the AI first creates an image, then the 3D model).

  • “Fast” quality: ready in about a minute.
  • “Detailed” quality: a more precise shape, takes a little longer.
  • An AI model costs 5 points from a photo or 3 from text; failed generations are refunded.
  • AI models are marked “AI” in the dashboard, so you know which ones are worth scanning.

Frequently asked questions

What phone do I need to scan?

Any recent iPhone or Android phone with a good camera. No LiDAR needed. Scanning runs in the browser, so there is nothing to install.

How long until the 3D dish is ready?

Scanning takes about a minute and 3D processing usually a few minutes. With AI, a preview is ready in 1–3 minutes.

Do guests need an app for AR?

No. The menu opens in the browser. On iPhone, “See it on your table” uses AR Quick Look in Safari; on Android, Scene Viewer, on ARCore-compatible phones.

Can I replace an AI model with a real scan?

Yes. Scan the dish from the menu and, once the new model is ready, it replaces the old one. The dish link and QR code stay the same.

What happens if a scan fails?

If no 3D model can be built, the scan is refunded automatically. Most problems come from poor light, glossy surfaces or moving too fast.

What does “real size” mean in AR?

If you enter the plate diameter, the dish appears on the guest’s table at its real size; otherwise the guest can scale it up or down.
